If you wish to prevent other users from going through your personal files, you would need to do more than hide them in a deep folder structure. Windows doesn't have any useful features which can help you in this situation, but you can always turn to a third party application to encrypt your files. Lavasoft Digital Lock can render your files unreadable and keep them that way until the correct password is provided. It is capable of encrypting files, using powerful algorithms and dispose of the originals at the same time.

The application works on Windows XP, Vista, Win 7 an Win 8 and it provides support for both 32 and 64-bit editions.

Options for encrypting and decrypting files are presented on the left side of the application's compact user interface. Files or folders can be targeted on a separate window, on which you can also choose an additional option, like deleting or shredding the original files when the encryption process is complete. You have to go through the same procedure to decrypt the files, but you can also tick a few options to open the files, once they are decrypted, and to re-encrypt them when closed.

If you attempt to open an encrypted file, the application will load it automatically on its interface and it will ask you for its corresponding password to decrypt it. On other computers, which don't have Lavasoft Digital Lock installed, the operating system will not be able to open the files at all. The application can also create encrypted self extracting files, which can be decrypted on other computers, without installing anything.

Another useful feature is the possibility of sending encrypted files via email. Once it encrypts one or more files, the software can attach them as HTML or self extracting files or as encrypted files in their native format.
